Flexible and efficient high quality scanning of NDT-films and CR-plates

Vision in X ISee! Professional software can be used for scanning and digital archiving of films and CR plates.  ISee! Professional offers support for a large number of film- and CR-scanners to accomplish this task.

Additionally, and thanks to powerful build-in programming language, ISee! Professional can be used for efficient batch scanning of high volume tasks.  One simple example of steps for such a batch scanning would be: scan, automatically apply a look-up table (e.g. for purpose of linearisation), apply some image processing (e.g. high-pass filter), save both resulting images (original and filtered) and, finally, continue with scanning of the next film or CR plate.  All these steps can be easily implemented by writing a script-program for ISee! Professional and can be modified/customised by the users to meet their changing requirements at any moment.

Example 1: Archival-grade film digitizing (class DS after ISO/EN 14096-2)

Part 2 of ISO/EN 14096 standard defines minimal requirements for digitizing of industrial X-ray films.  Archival-grade digitizing has to be performed with devices fulfilling Class DS after ISO/EN 14096-2.

The Array 2905 HD laser digitiser is currently, to our best knowledge, the only device, among practically handlebar ones, which allows scanning up to Class DS9 after ISO/EN 14096-2.  It is the equipment of choice for users who demand the highest image quality.  We do not consider drum scanners here, because they are generally way too labour intensive for day-to-day practical use.  The Array 2905 HD is fully supported by the ISee! Professional software.

Array 2905 HD (High Density) key technical specifications:

  • Comply to Class DS9 (range 0-4.7 OD) after ISO/EN 14096-2
  • Optical density range: 0 - 4.7 OD
  • Resolution (sampling pitch): 50 - 500 µm (in 1 µm steps)
  • Scan speed: 7 seconds at 200 micron
  • Light source: He Ne Laser, (632.8 nm)
  • Sensor: Photomultiplier
  • Scanning system: Flat Scanning by Polygon Mirror and Field Flattener Lens
  • A/D convertor: 12 bits (4096 gray levels)
  • Scanning width: 14 inch / line maximum
  • Scanning Length: No limit with specific software
  • Film sizes: 8" X 10" - 14" X 17"
  • Host interface: SCSI (older units), USB2 (newer units)
  • Dimensions and weight: 53 cm X 77 cm X 33 cm, 45 kg

Example 2: Film digitizing after Class DB and DA

Another film digitizer which can be used with ISee! Professional is Vidar NDT PRO.  It is a cost-effective scanner specially made for NDT market.  Its important features are the absence of moving parts in the optical path and a field-replaceable LED light source.  Additionally, it features automatic calibration mechanism, which ensures consistent performance over time.  It also comes with a smaller price tag, compared to Array 2905.

Vision in X has evaluated the digitiser and can recommend it for all, but most quality critical applications.  For highest quality applications we would still recommend the Array 2905 HD.

Vidar NDT PRO key specifications:

  • Comply to Class DA and Class DB after ISO/EN 14096-2
  • Optical density range: 0.5 - 4.0 OD
  • Resolution: 3, 6 and 11 lp/mm (corresponds to 170, 85 and 44 µm spot size)
  • Scan rate: 92 lines/second
  • Sensor: CCD
  • Automatic film feeder (digitizes up to 25 films in batch mode)
  • Works with films 2.36"-14" wide and 8"-51" long
  • Host interface: USB 2.0
  • Dimensions and weight: 48 cm x 38 cm x 32 cm, 21 kg

Example 3: Doing CR with GE, Fuji or Dürr CR-Readers

The performance of a Computed Radiography (CR) system is defined by the combination of imaging plate (IP) and the scanning device (i.e. CR-reader) used.  There are many available combinations suitable for different purposes: high resolution systems, systems for fast exposure, easy handling, etc.

Vision in X ISee! Professional software supports a range of CR-readers from different manufacturers, cassette-based as well as casseteless, i.e. working with flexible envelopes.  These are GE-units, e.g. CRx Flex and CRx 25P CR-Readers, Fujifilm Dynamix HR and HR² CR-Readers, and Dürr CR-readers in all flavours (e.g. HD-CR 35 NDT or HD-CR 43 NDT).

Since correct selection of a CR-system is a rather complex matter, we do not provide any general recommendations here.
